After a short hiatus, we’re back in full swing with episodes lined up through July. And I couldn’t be more excited to kick things off with a guest who brings both humor and insight. Today, I have the pleasure of welcoming Shawn Green, better known by his stage name, Bingo. Shawn is a seasoned comedic actor, an improviser, and the host of the Halfway Okay Podcast.

A Toast to Old Fashioneds and Improv

Our conversation started with a quintessential Drink O’Clock moment: a toast. Both Shawn and I share a love for bourbon, specifically Bullet bourbon. While I sipped on a Bullet rye old fashioned, Shawn enjoyed his bourbon neat. This naturally led us into a discussion about our favorite cocktails and the art of making them. Shawn admitted that he rarely makes cocktails at home due to the effort involved, preferring the simplicity of bourbon or beer. His favorite cocktail, however, is an extra dirty vodka martini, which he describes as tasting like a “salt lick”—something he adores but leaves to the professionals to craft.

The Comedy Journey Begins

Shawn’s journey into comedy and improv is both relatable and inspiring. Like many who grow up as the “funny kid” to cope with bullying, Shawn used humor as a defense mechanism. This early development of a sense of humor helped him turn potential bullies into friends, and by high school, he had found his niche among the outcasts who were, paradoxically, often the cool kids.

His comedic influences include classics like Conan O’Brien, The Simpsons, and Kids in the Hall, which he watched despite growing up without cable and relying on fuzzy TV signals. His entry into the world of performance came through a public access improv show, which he found liberating and exciting, especially since it allowed swearing—a fact he thoroughly enjoyed exploiting.

From Public Access to Podcasting

Shawn’s involvement in public access TV led to forming an improv troupe and performing both live and broadcasted shows. These experiences honed his skills and introduced him to a network of like-minded creatives. One significant project was a mostly improvised film, “The Wonderland Express,” in which he co-starred with comedian Ryan Singer.

The Challenges and Joys of Improv

Improv, as Shawn explains, is a double-edged sword. It’s challenging because it requires thinking on your feet without the safety net of pre-written material. But it’s also rewarding because of the unique connection it creates with the audience. Shawn shared his perspective on bombing during an improv performance, describing it as awkward but ultimately humorous and a part of the learning process.

Final Thoughts

Our discussion wasn’t just about drinks and jokes; it was about the resilience and creativity that comedy fosters. Shawn’s journey from a bullied kid to a confident performer who embraces his quirks and uses them to entertain others is a testament to the power of humor.

So, here’s to more laughs, more great conversations, and of course, more delicious drinks. Stay tuned for more episodes packed with intriguing guests and engaging discussions.

Cheers!
